Your Opinion-homeschool phonics/reading.

I really enjoy asking people who are homeschooling and have already taught their little ones to read about what curriculum they thought was best for teaching their child to read. My My is READY to learn.

I could really use all of your help in telling me what you use so I can decide what I would like to use next year. Can't wait to hear what you have to share!

I took this pic before church Sunday-HAD TO SHARE!

Our baby chicks are REALLY growing in the eggs-flapping around in there like crazy! So AWESOME! We are down to 17 now. Have a FABULOUS TUESDAY!

I can't help you with the right books, but definitely jump on it! Kids CAN learn to read really early sometimes.

(I learned when I was 3. My dd learned at 4.)

It really depends on the individual child.
I have used Recipe For Reading (available online) with my daughter who had learning difficulties. This program starts with learning just 7 letters, and immediately has them reading all the three letter words made up with these sounds. My daughter needed that 'immediate' result to see the purpose in learning the letters. Learning the entire alphabet first was way too overwhelming to her.
My youngest son practically taught himself. He learned the letters and sounds listening to me teach his brother, and just took off from there...I'm still amazed at how it all happened. One day he said to me,"Since God has given me the gift to read, maybe you should teach me." That was over a year ago, and he is now just seven and reading at least at a grade three level.
My best advice is, don't spend a lot of money on a fancy curriculum! Just start by teaching the letters and sounds; either with flashcards or just printing them on paper, chalk board or dry erase board, and see how she does.

Sing, Spell, Read and Write...lots of songs. Also, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I have not used Bob Jones K and 1st grade yet but my girlfriend has and she LOVES it. She is a school teacher by degree and she loves the curriculum..especially the reading and English.

I used "Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons" for all four of my kiddos. My 7 year old is reading at a 5th grade level right now. They all liked it (some actually loved it and begged to do it every day) and learned fairly quickly. It only takes 20 minutes a day.

Blessings from Texas,
Kristi

Thanks for the post, friend. I can't wait to read all the comments--I have not found the perfect curriculum either.

Deborah is right - it depends on individual. I have four kids that are all 2nd grade up to 9th. All learned differently BUT if he is visual, "Teaching Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" is great. I have also gone the cheap route and made my own phonics flash cards .... if you have some questions, I'd love to help if I can. Email me if you'd like ...

I used Professor Phonics with my oldest--I loved it, as it taught him to blend the sounds from the start, so he learned to read much more smoothly than many kids.

I have used a bunch of things, but I think that 100EZ is essentially foolproof. Be forewarned: nobody finishes the book. You'll be about halfway through by the time your little reader tires of it and begs to be let loose on REAL books. :-)

Jenn- we have LOVED using Sonlight I can read. I love using Bob Books.

I love using the chalk board to right up new words - then review them all week - teaching the rules and sounds with each group.

I loved using Leapfrog DVD series - within one month of watching them two of ours began reading on their own. Once a day did the trick to pull it all together for them with all of the above.

Love and hugs,
Jill

I love The Reading Lesson. I'm using it with Alli right now. I can show it to you if you want to look. Grant started with 100 EZ Lessons...but I did not like it. The Reading Lesson is much easier to use for me, and it's written for little ones.
